I've noticed that ZIP files created with VCLZip are not compatible with 7-ZIP although virtually every other archiver I've tried works without a problem (WinZip, WinRAR, other freeware and shareware ones). Any idea why this is so?

Because those are zip utilities (applications) that have added multiple zip formats to their capabilities. VCLZip is a PKZip compatable component. You could create an application and use multiple components for each format (VCLZip being for PKZip).
